Girls Who Code is coming to Thief River Falls!

A local club of Girls Who Code, a national non-profit focused on closing the gender gap in technology, is launching in Thief River Falls and DigiKey couldn't be more excited to help spread the word.

Girls Who Code was founded five years ago with the belief that computing skills are a critical path to security and prosperity in today’s job market. What began with 20 girls in the heart of New York City, Girls Who Code will reach 40,000 girls in all 50 U.S. states by the end of this year.

The demographic of Girls Who Code is the demographic of our nation. From Clubs in rural Oklahoma, to homeless shelters in Massachusetts, to the country’s most prestigious private schools—girls everywhere are united by their passion to use technology to solve problems in their day-to-day lives and make a positive impact on the world.

While DigiKey isn’t directly sponsoring the club, we look forward to supporting what we can within the community. With a strong FIRST Robotics team operating out of Thief River Falls’ Lincoln High School, we hope that this Girls Who Code club can become just as strong and cement the region as a leader in technology education and the focus on STEM careers.

During this past summer, DigiKey and Adafruit partnered together to provide more than 750 Circuit Playgrounds to the Girls Who Code national office in New York for their distribution directly to their local clubs around the country. Through the Buy One, Give One campaign, for each Circuit Playground ordered from DigiKey, one was donated to Girls Who Code. We look forward to continued opportunities to support this organization.

There will be an informational meeting for parents and students on November 6th at the Thief River Falls Public Library from 4–5 p.m. The club is open, free of charge, to students in grades 6th–12th who want to discover where a future in tech could take them!
