Switching regulators have much higher efficiencies, but they are much more complicated. Many external support components, knowledge of switching regulators, and board layout specifications are more critical. A customer will convert to a switching regulator only when required to and typically when efficiency is important. Also, if stepping-up or inverting a voltage, a switching regulator is needed.
