API FAQs

What are APIs?

API is an acronym for Application Program(ming) Interface. They are a set of requirements that govern how one application (or computer program) can talk to another.

Are APIs and EDI the same?

Short answer: no. They are different standards, although both communicate data about pricing, availability, ordering, and more.

EDI is “Electronic Data Interchange”

  • Not real-time
  • Proven technology since the early 1980s
  • Specially designed for Supply Chain processes
  • Strict framework for all parties to agree on specific formats (invoices, orders, etc.)

API is “Application Programming Interface”

  • Real time
  • Recent technology, adopted in B2B in the last 10 years
  • Expose the functionality and services of an application to the outside world
  • Common protocol (XML/JSON over HTTP) with customizable transactions

  • Search for Product Information
  • Receive Real-Time Price and Availability
  • Lock in Pricing with Quoting
  • Place an Order
  • View Order Status
  • Change an unfulfilled Order

  • Manage Supply Chain Program
  • Identify a Product or an Order using a barcode
  • Identify a Product or an Order using a Tracing ID

Why should my business consider implementing an API from DigiKey?

APIs help customers create a competitive advantage in their business. APIs give customers the ability to access DigiKey’s data directly in real-time and perform transactions more efficiently, such as submitting orders instantly. Connecting directly with DigiKey’s data allows you to save time and money and can even help with your time-to-market!

Can we do mixed technologies like EDI and API?

Yes, and with added benefit. You can use both to form a closed-loop, Machine-to-Machine connection that is more efficient than one or the other alone.

When I search for a part using an API, is the information current?

Yes, the API pulls the information directly from DigiKey’s database in real-time!

Does the Price and Availability API show “my pricing”?

Yes! The API will show your pricing according to your agreement with DigiKey, including preferred prices.

How long is pricing good for?

Just like the website, pricing can change, but you have the option of obtaining a quote using the Quote API. The same rules apply as a traditional DigiKey quote (quote pricing is valid for 30 days).

Do you allow customers unlimited access?

No, for the standard APIs, a customer is limited to 1000 searches per day. Larger amounts are available but must be approved by an appropriate sales manager.

What forms of payment can be used for an API order?

We require customers to have a DigiKey Credit Account before API orders can be placed. You can apply here.

How does a customer implement one or more of DigiKey’s APIs?

There are two ways to implement: one is to rely on your in-house development team, and the other is to work with one of our trusted partners. Learn more about our partners here.
