The differences originate from the early days of capacitor development in which specifications were set more by the performance inherent to the specific manufacturing technology than by common customer needs. Ceramic capacitor manufacturers, therefore, set up specifications to provide comparisons with other capacitors of similar technology, as did manufacturers of tantalum capacitors, electrolytics and capacitors in other technologies.
