There are two major types of applications that need ESD protection, high-speed data buses found in consumer electronic products and wireless mobile telecom and datacom products. Consumer products include Digital TVs, DVD players and recorders, and satellite and cable set top boxes. These products all have high speed data bus interconnections. People have direct access to these bus cables and associated electronic circuitry requiring that both the transmitting and receiving ends have protection from potential ESD. Wireless mobile telecom and datacom products have antennas that can be a portal for ESD voltage which can damage or destroy the electronic circuitry within. Panasonic has a wide range of ESD suppression components, from high capacitance to super low capacitance types to serve these applications. There are one of three categories of multi-layer ceramic varistors (EZJ-Z) that are appropriate for low to higher frequencies and data rates. Each one has a correspondingly lower value of capacitance since, as the frequency increases, a lower capacitance value is required to insure that there is no signal interference. The highest frequencies and data rates require a component with an ultra low ‘loading’ capacitance value like the ESD Suppressor (EZA-EG), with less than 0.1 pF of capacitance. This ultra low value ensures that it does not interfere with high speed data buses, such as the high definition media interface (HDMI), or with the antenna circuitry of wireless mobile datacom and telecom signals.
