MLCV functions can compare the change in the sudden resistance value of the varistor characteristic to an ON/OFF switch. Typically MLCVs are in a state of high resistance, which would be similar to a switch being OFF, not affecting the circuit voltage or signal quality. During periods of abnormal voltage the resistance value becomes similar to a switch being ON, controlling the voltage by bypassing the excessive electric current to GND which in turn protects the integrated circuit (IC).
