This is a magnified view of an MLCC of typical standard design and construction. This image shows the electrodes, which are black, the ceramic material, which is tan, and the end termination, which is silver. The crack running diagonally through the MLCC is very typical of a board flex crack. The crack crosses opposing electrodes which are supposed to be at different potentials, but the crack causes a conductive path, resulting in a short circuit.
