In the open mode design (OMD), the flex crack is still present. However, due to the internal construction of the OMD MLCC, the crack does not cross opposing electrodes, so no short-circuit is formed. It is true that the capacitor still will not function, but because there is no short-circuit, it will not melt down in a catastrophic failure.
