Whether the customer is using polymer tantalum or manganese dioxide tantalum capacitors, Murata’s ECAS series polymer aluminum capacitors are an ideal replacement. Designed in an industry standard D(7343) case size and land pattern, the ECAS series allows for drop-in tantalum replacement. Furthermore, unlike tantalum capacitors, voltage de-rating is not required for polymer aluminum capacitors due to its forming voltage. This is the voltage used to anodize its plates in manufacturing and contributes to the capacitor’s working voltage. Since polymer aluminum capacitors exhibit lower ESR allowing for capacitance reduction, in some replacement applications, one can reduce capacitance or rated voltage and still result with the same circuit performance. There are two design-in considerations for the customer wishing to replace tantalum capacitors in their application; the actual line voltage on the circuit and the actual required capacitance value and equivalent series resistance. The tables on this slide show example replacements for a manganese dioxide tantalum capacitor and a polymer tantalum capacitor. The drop-in compatible replacement has the same capacitance and voltage rating as well as the same package size. However with capacitance reduction and rated voltage reduction based on a given customer’s requirements, there are also other replacement options available in the same package size. The next slide will highlight targeted replacement opportunities for the ECAS series.
