The 120-degree commutation is the simplest form, while 180-degree is the most complex form of driving a brushless DC motor. Each one has their pros and cons. For applications that require high motor efficiency, low noise, and low torque ripple, the 180-degree (or commonly also known as sine-wave commutation) will be preferred. Meanwhile, for simpler designs, 120-degree commutation may be sufficient.
