Another potential application for the SM351LT/SM353LT is in cylinder and piston detection. In this application, the sensor is able to sense through 0.25 inches (6.35 mm) of thick wall aluminum to detect the piston’s position inside the cylinder. A low Gauss MR sensor will work in this application, where a standard Hall-effect sensor will not provide a long enough distance to be a reliable solution. For this application, design engineers need high sensitivity to enable the sensing through a thick cylinder wall and reliable magnetics. A temperature range of up to 150˚C (302 °F) may be needed, depending on the application, and the solution must be durable.
